10 on 10-January Edition

I have joined with 9 other photographers to capture 10 photos on the 10th of each month. It is so challenging!

Once again, I am in awe of just how hard it is to take time to shoot for me. This project is all about capturing what life is like, and so this month I chose the last half of my day on a Wednesday. My husband is a youth pastor, so I play the role of helper, and wannabe teenager several times a week. Wednesday is one of the most crazy days of the week for us. Here's what it looks like.

Here is Princess, seated as my co-pilot on our way to pick up my girls from school! She loves it.

I had such so much fun at work this year. From the weddings, to the babies, to the sweet families I got the chance to meet, every day was an incredible blessing to do what I love and it's all because of you. I'm almost positive that 2012 will be just as fun, if not better! Here are some of my favorite images from 2011!

If you aren't on my blog today, it doesn't mean that I don't cherish the images we captured together, only that I don't have nearly enough time to blog them all. I look forward to this next year as we make new memories together!

Time. Where in the world does it all go? It seems just like yesterday that I had this little tiny helpless baby in my arms. She is the reason I picked up the camera in the first place. I learned all the tricks of the Mommy trade by practicing on her. She is 10 now, and growing up faster than I would like, but I'm so glad I get to watch her do it.

She and I played hooky yesterday and headed out to the movies. When you have two younger sisters who are soaking up a lot of attention, it's good to get away with your awesomely cool Mom for a movie. The Muppet Movie to be exact, and I HIGHLY recommend it.

It's a late evening post, because it has been so crazy busy around here lately that I've barely had time to breathe, much less put this together. This week's post is important, so I wanted to make sure I got it in there.

These girls are my life, and although as a group, they usually run from me when they see me pull my camera out, this week, they huddled together in very cold temperatures to take photos. It was a momentous occaision.

My munchkin. She's famous on this blog by now. What you may not know about her, is that her life started with a scary week or two for us. She stayed in the NICU for a week before we could bring her home. Her lungs just weren't ready, though she was only 5 days early. I'm thankful that each day, we get to experience life with her (she fills our house with laughter and chaos) and we wouldn't have it any other way.

One of the things that I most love about my job is hearing/seeing/reading the reaction out of a client when they see their favorite image for the first time. I absolutely love getting happy feedback. Part of me will admit that yes, I do like the affirmation that I sort of know what I'm doing, but part of me also loves the fact that all of the hard work that goes into an image actually has paid off. Just FYI, guys, it REALLY is a lot of work.

What I do, is not point and shoot photography (Wal Mart, Sears, your best friend with an awesome camera, etc.). There is absolutely nothing wrong with those places, if that's what you are looking for in your portraits. I am not a photography snob, but I DO know that there is a difference between what I do, and what they do. I spend days thinking over each session, gathering ideas, poses, and inspiration. I choose a location tailored to the style of each client, and then when it's time for the actual session, I use the boatloads of knowledge that I try to continuously learn when using my camera. My camera is never set on "Auto". I am thinking of a million things at once while on our session and I love it! How to compose the image, what is the right setting for what is behind my subject, what angle will make the colors, and features of the photo "pop", all the while trying to engage the client. It is incredibly fun, but it is NOT easy.

Then, when I take home your precious images, I upload them to my computer and I spend time on each photo. I accentuate the colors, the shadows, the play of the light. Fun, but again, not easy. It's not a push of a button, or a computer program that runs automatically. Each photograph is a piece of you, but it is also a piece of me. Each photograph is a product, something that I have made. It can't simply be given away on a cd. I understand in this market that is saturated with inexpensive photographers, that it is common to get a cd for little or nothing, but with what I do, this can't be the case. It's my time away from my family, time invested in how YOU will react when you see the image. Each photograph takes more than 10 minutes to edit, sometimes MUCH more. Multiply that times 30 or so images, and voila, you have at least half a day of editing. It's why I love, the art of photography. Each session is different for each client. Custom photography may not be for everyone, but I hope that my clients (who I tend to think of as family) will continue to treasure my work and images for years to come, and that our family will continue to grow. :)

As a photographer, a bridal session is one of the most exciting, yet frustrating things to shoot. You have these great photos that you can't wait to share with everyone, yet you have to wait until after the wedding until you can show them off. It's especially frustrating when you have a subject that was at ease in front of the camera as this one. Natalie was so much fun to work with, and her big day was so beautiful! I enjoy this project more every month. It forces me to slow down and think about what's important enough to capture. 10 photos on the 10th of every month!

I kiss my kids constantly. Sometimes, yes I admit it, they run from me when they see me pucker up. I just can't help it. In a few years, I won't be able to catch them. While I'm still pretty fast I get all the kisses I can. I try never to miss an opportunity for a hug either. This month for my ten on ten, I focused on a few kisses that you might see around our house.

I went on a beautiful vacation (you have to say it with a whisper, if you want to get the feel of how it actually was, it was delightful!) with my sister and my mother a week and a half ago. We made port at Cozumel in the middle of the week, and while my mom was getting her massage on the beach, my sister and I decided to frolic around and get some fun shots. Enjoy!

I have lived in Texas for over 7 years now and haven't made it to the state fair.. until this year! It was amazing. The colors, the sounds, the food, it hit me right where I love, my lens. :) I decided to use this opportunity for my 10 on 10 to view the fair simply as a photographer, not a mom, not a wife, but just as an artist. I love it when I can just shoot for the fun of it!

This was obviously one of my favorite weddings I have ever done. Why? It was family. Everywhere I turned, someone was hugging me, and getting everyone to smile for the camera was just about as easy as pie. Not to mention, the beautiful images I came away with. 13 years ago today, an outgoing boy asked me out on a date. It was the first week of our first year of college and we have been together ever since. We were eighteen.. In 23 days, we celebrate 12 years of marriage. We are partners in everything. Parenting, ministry, life in general. He still makes me smile everyday. :)

So this week is about him. He hates being in front of the camera so obviously he loves me very much to do this for me.

He's super Dad.

He works hard all the time. His work boots show lots of wear.

His ring has deformed his hand because he never takes it off. Ever.

Project 52- The End of Summer

So I headed out early in the morning (morning breath early) to go capture some nature shots before it hit 150 degrees today (I exaggerate for effect). It was peaceful, and quiet, and not at all what I am used to. The light was gorgeous, and the air was heavy and sweet.It was the perfect representation of the end of summer in the South.

Goodness what a fun time I had working on these. We woke up to rain on the day of our scheduled session (we needed the rain so badly!) and I briefly considered postponing. There was no way that I couldn't take advantage of the rain and use it to our advantage, though. I picked up some umbrellas and decided that I had "nature's prop". I am so excited about how these turned out, and will be doing more rain sessions if we ever get any more. :)

I have to just say how absolutely excited (and a wee bit intimidated) I am to be a part of this project. I have joined 9 other photographers in capturing a day in our lives. I want to be able to look back at this time with my children and remember as much as possible. The days go by so quickly...

I will post 10 images on the tenth of every month and then send you on to one of my fabulous partners. Deal? Okay, here we go...

8:00 a.m.

Here is my constant companion. When I wake up, she is right beside me. When I am editing, she is always curled up at my feet. She is such a sweet puppy.

9:00 a.m.

If you knew that this was only her second omelet in her whole life, you would be impressed.

10:00 a.m.

This is not a typical day for me. I get to hang out and babysit this sweet guy! He has a hard time being away from his Mommy.

11:00 a.m.

Shout out to all the moms of three out there.. Are you pickin' up what I'm putting down here? It NEVER ends.

12:30 p.m.

After lunch we all escaped to the tepid pool (over a month of consecutive 100+ degree days). Texas in summer. Gotta love it.

1:30 p.m.

And we stayed and played some more...

2:30 p.m.

After pool snack.. mmmm.

3:30 p.m.

She doesn't sit still for long, so I have to really appreciate it when she will snuggle with me.

4:00 p.m.

We are all a bit tired after our bath.. er.. um. swim..

The cavalry has arrived and I am free to go to one of my favorite places.. the gym!

Do they always get along? No. Is it a rewarding challenge raising three very charasmatic, energetic, and beautiful young ladies? Always. This moment was captured with a bribe. :) It's very rare that all three enjoy each other's company at one time, but I know that just as I grew up to be the best of friends with my sister after years of torturing and squabbling with her, my girls will find that same close relationship with each other.

I am including this one, because on Sunday, I will be the mother of a 10 year old. My how time flies by.

What kind of daughter would I be if I let this week pass and didn't reflect on my wonderful mom?

I get my wit from my Dad, and my creativity from my mom. She loves to read, write, and draw. We also love to have discussions on politics (much to my sister's dismay!).
She has ALWAYS been there for me and has the most infectious laugh I have ever heard (living with my Dad, it is almost impossible not to spend most of your time laughing.) My girls adore her, and would rather spend their Friday nights with Gamma and Papa than here at home.

How can I ever say thanks enough for all that she has done and sacrificed for our family? I can't, but I will spend as much time as I can trying.

To my sister, who cannot be here with me to celebrate our awesome Mother, we miss you!

My mother has a love for gardening as well, so I am putting up photos of some beautiful flowers from her garden.

She's an awesome instructor, who is going places fast. :) I love the way these turned out, and since we are lucky enough to know her pretty well, my little E got to come along and help out.

I had my first bluebonnet session of the spring a few weeks ago, and had such a blast with this sweet family. I love this time of year (though I may need a whole new wardrobe from all the grass stains I get while doing these sessions, totally worth it, though!)

One huge aspect of my life is the ministry that my husband and I have been blessed to be involved in. He is a youth pastor to some wonderful teens. I love teen ministry! While most people think that teens are hard to reason with, hard to reach, and hard to teach. I find them quite the opposite (most of the time). They are simply looking for someone who will take the time and invest in them. Someone who actually believes that they can do the things that are expected of them, and go beyond expectations. They are loud, moody, and such a gift to our family. :) These teens take up a huge part of my heart. I can't tell you how it feels to finally break through the tough exterior of a teens wall and build a discipling relationship with them. Walking with them through this time of insecurity, awkwardness, and growing up, is soemthing that I always want to be part of.

This week, my theme is prayer, something we have been doing a lot of around here lately. We came very close to losing someone in my family this week, and I cannot tell you how comforting, and reassuring prayer has been. Having others pray for you, and being able to lift up your own scared, frustrated, and even questioning cries means the world when that world is turned upside down. I'm so grateful that I have been given the gift of a relationship with God.

Thank you, God for prayer.

There are lots of things about this photo that I love.

Shooting at night, love it. I hardly ever get to do it, but when I do I have so much fun!

Look at all the angles to work with, love them. You can do so much with angles, and take your photo in all different directions! If you are learning photography, go practice angles now! :)

I got to spend time with my husband while shooting this, love it. Life is crazy, and it's always a blessing to get to be with him. :)

This is a photo of the new Irving Convention Center. If you have ever been there to see this place, it is amazing. Also, the fabulous water feature in the front was done by the company my husband works for, InControl Water Systems .

This post makes me realize that I need to do more photography at night. I can think of a million things to photograph in our area!

Extra Blessed

This family won my free facebook giveaway in January. After a few postponements (about 4) due to sickness, and crazy weather, we finally got to spend some time together on a gorgeous late afternoon. This family is absolutely inspiring. I sometimes feel overwhelmed with my three sweet, yet crazy children, but this Mom and Dad seem to thrive with 6 kiddos!

I love having daughters. I love sleepovers, I love shopping with them, and I love watching them interact with their friends. Though I have not been off of my feet for more than ten minutes today as I prepared for this evening, I know it will be worth it when she remembers this years from now.

I am not used to doing things last minute, but when I got a call to do these photos I jumped at it.

This sweet boy just takes my breath away. His parents showed me nothing but joy and happiness in what might be the midst of a very stressful time. It gave me a boost, and I felt blessed to be able to share these photos with them and you.

Textures. They can turn a simple image into something complex. You can find textures everywhere you look, and since I can't look at anything without thinking about how it might be photographed, I find myself constantly distracted. They make all the difference in the world sometimes. I love textures. They inspire me!

It's almost time to mow the backyard, and spring is almost here!

Spring, how I love thee.

To me, it symbolizes a new beginning as winters grip of death slowly fades away. New life springs forth and you can see it everywhere. A slumbering serenity slowly returns to us. (I'm a fan of aliteration!). I can get outside and exercise, play with the girls, and take photographs! This is my absolute favorite time of the year.

Babies.
New life. How can you not love them? They are totally dependent, and trusting, and small.

I took this during a session that I had this week and I love the perspective that it's from. You see the baby, but not the face. You know that there is innocence there without having to look into his little eyes (which are blue and oh so gorgeous). I love babies.

How do you photograph the sense of smell? Thats was the question of the week for me.

I love the way a certain smell can take you back to a distant memory like nothing else can. It can remind you of the people you love, or have forgotten but long to remember. I love the smell of the ocean, the fragrant flowers of spring, fresh laundry, a summertime backyard barbecue, all of it! You can't really compare anything to a beautiful scent.

Here's to your nose. :)

To put it quite simply, I love this girl (all my girls will eventually get their own week featured here, of course). I love that she is a bookworm like me. I love that she has a sense of humor that she hasn't grown into yet, and I'm excited to see what happens when that creativity combines with her wit. I love that she loves to sleep late like me. I love her thick hair and her dimples. I love that she doesn't care what other people think, and she has an amazing self esteem. I love that she shares her faith to anyone who will listen, and that she is the first to volunteer to pray.

She was my first baby. I learned how to be a mother from her. I learned about nursing, and what it's like to go weeks on just a few hours of sleep. I learned about the joys of watching cartoons. I learned that I am a better mother than I ever thought I could be.

She is everything I had hoped for and more.

Yes, my project 52 is early this week, but I have a session this afternoon, and am leaving town for a visit with a friend and to photograph a sweet new baby, so I won't be able to get to it tomorrow. I don't want to skip a week, so I'm cheating. :)

It's the little things, right? I love sweets (chocolate is my achilles heel, but any candy will do just about at any time to make me smile). I loved watching my girls eyes the first time I gave them a piece of candy. I often wish that I could extract this sweet tooth because I battle with it daily. It's so tasty.

This project was hard for me, because I find I am more successful at capturing expression in faces, and movement. It's something I'm working on as an artist, so hopefully as this project goes on, I will find more things that I can use to inspire me. But until then, mmmmm. candy. :)

I have started a Project 52 this year. I will be taking a photo once a week and posting it on Friday. The subject will usually vary, but it will always be something I love, or that inspires me. You can check out my other Project 52 subjects if you scroll down just a bit. :)

This week I chose our dog, Princess. She is sweet, cuddly, and mischevious. She puts up with the girls dressing her up in baby doll clothes, and picking her up constantly. She sleeps curled up behind my knees (yep, she's a spooner) and she always greets me at the door. She also helps me weed out the girls toys as she chews their abandoned stuffed animals.
I think she is a looker, but some tend to disagree. As my friend Holly once put it, "she's so ugly, she's pretty".

I love her so much. She is also a ham, and loves to have her photo taken (one of the reasons she and I get along so well).

I have decided to do a Project 52 this year. I love taking photos, so maybe this will be easy to stick with! A project 52 is an attempt to take one photo a week and at the end of the year look back and reflect on how far you have come as a person, and as a photographer. This is an exciting prospect for me and I am really looking forward to it. My project 52 will be about things that I love, that inspire me, and I will write an accompanying blog to explain why I chose that subject. I hope you will all follow my photographic journey this year and keep me accountable!

Finding my passion for photography has been an amazing journey, thus far. After the birth of my children, I felt a little lost. I was a mom, and a wife, but otherwise felt that I didn't have a well rounded set of interests. I started small by taking classes at a community college and shadowing a photographer at his weddings. I really enjoyed being in the middle of all the action and the reveled in the anticipation of seeing my work reflected back at me through their reactions to it.

I am a very introverted person, but when I get behind my camera that seems to all slip away. I become confident, and have a joy, and a sense of "yes, this is right". I feel like I have found my place.

It took me a while to find the right style for my photography, and I believe I am coming into my own, thanks to my husband and friends who keep pushing me forward when my confidence starts to fail me. I stay awake the night before a session or wedding just so excited and eager to be there. I get butterflies every time I show my clients their proofs. I really do. I have been blessed beyond words to be able to love a job this much.

I love being a photographer.

My children have long gotten over the thrill of having their photos taken. You would assume because I love photography so much, I would have tons of photos of them all around the house. The truth is, however, that because I have used them for practice so often, I have to beg and plead with them to get them to cooperate. On a rare, warm December day, I got what I asked for. I sometimes get the fun opportunity to spend the afternoon with a cute kid who means a lot to me. His mom often helps me out at weddings, and with other things that go along with running a business. When these days come around, I take full advantage of whipping out my camera and snapping away. He loves me, so he always smiles for me. :)
